Abuja: The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has formed a strategic alliance with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) to combat corruption, substandard projects, and building collapses nationwide.
According to Voice of Nigeria, the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed at ICPC headquarters in Abuja by Chairman Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu and COREN President Prof. Sadiq Zubair Abubakar. This collaboration signals a united front to enforce strict professional standards and hold violators accountable.
Dr. Aliyu emphasized the critical role both organizations play in Nigeria. He highlighted COREN’s importance to national infrastructure, stating that ICPC’s responsibility is to ensure accountability and transparency in engineering projects. He warned against approving certificates for ghost projects or substandard work and vowed to refer compromised engineers to COREN for sanctions and legal action. He insisted that Nigerians deserve quality infrastructure and full value for public funds.
The collaboration will see COREN’s technical expertise bolster ICPC’s Constituency and Executive Projects Tracking Initiative (CEPTI). This initiative aims to ensure that government-funded projects adhere to approved designs and safety standards. Dr. Aliyu condemned the recurring tragedy of building collapses and called for urgent preventive measures, stressing the need to stop this cycle before more lives are lost.
Dr. Aliyu also urged COREN to act as ICPC’s ‘eyes on the ground’ to protect the integrity of the engineering profession and maintain public trust. Prof. Abubakar affirmed COREN’s readiness to work closely with ICPC to enforce compliance, sanction erring practitioners, and restore confidence in Nigeria’s engineering sector.
Prof. Abubakar stated that the MoU represents a renewed commitment to uphold professional excellence, public safety, and national development. This partnership aims to signal the end of cutting corners in Nigeria’s engineering projects.
