Post: ICSAN to Address Sustainable Business Practices in Emerging Economies

Lagos:The Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators of Nigeria (ICSAN) is set to explore how businesses can balance profitability with sustainable practices at its 60th annual conference. This event aims to provide guidance on navigating economic pressures while maintaining corporate governance standards.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the conference, themed ‘Balancing Profit and Purpose: Advancing Sustainable Business Practices in Emerging Economies,’ will gather governance professionals, economists, tax practitioners, business leaders, and other stakeholders. They will discuss the challenges businesses face in emerging economies, particularly in Nigeria’s current economic climate, which is marked by inflation, interest rates, and regulatory pressures.

ICSAN Vice President Francis Olawale highlighted the conference’s focus on the critical need for businesses to remain profitable while adhering to ethical standards and complying with laws. He emphasized the importance of providing practical guidance to help Nigerian businesses, many of which are in survival mode, remain commercially viable without compromising governance principles.

Olawale also noted the significance of economic prosperity as a component of nation-building, stating that the state of the economy impacts citizens’ welfare. The conference will address issues such as interest rates, inflation, taxation, and the distinction between legitimate tax planning and tax evasion. Experts from firms like PwC and Deloitte will contribute to discussions on the implications of tax reforms.

The role of corporate governance in sustainable growth will also be examined, with emphasis on the evolving responsibilities of governance professionals. ICSAN has played a role in developing corporate governance in Nigeria, contributing to policy development and advocating for effective governance standards.

Olawale stressed the importance of human capacity development for national progress, highlighting ICSAN’s efforts in training and capacity building from the student level through university partnerships and professional training. The conference will reflect on ICSAN’s 60-year contribution to corporate governance and professional development, showcasing its evolution and the expansion of its geographical reach.

The event will feature keynote and technical sessions, panel discussions, and opportunities for networking and mentoring. Renowned economist Dr. Biodun Adedipe will deliver the keynote address, while a representative from PwC will discuss tax reforms. The conference will also include an anniversary gala and awards ceremony, with recognition for individuals who have significantly contributed to ICSAN’s journey.
