Washington: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has reported that the global economy has demonstrated significant improvement despite prevailing uncertainties. This statement was made by IMF Managing Director, Kristalina Georgieva, during her presentation on the ‘Global Policy Agenda’ at the ongoing Annual Meetings of the World Bank Group.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Georgieva expressed that although the global economy is showing resilience, uncertainty continues to rise. She highlighted that gold values have maintained strength amidst transformations in geopolitics, technology, trade relations, and demography. Georgieva attributed the improved global economic situation to two main factors: enhanced policy fundamentals and the adaptability of the private sector. She noted that many countries, particularly emerging markets, have implemented sound policies and strengthened their institutions since the global financial crisis, which are now yielding positive results. Additionally, she praised the private sector’s agility in navigating uncertainty through strategies like import front-loading and supply chain strengthening.
However, Georgieva cautioned that the economic outlook remains underwhelming, with medium-term growth prospects appearing weak. She pointed out that public debt is nearing record highs and continues to climb, leading to an imbalanced global economy. She emphasized the need for countries to unlock private sector growth by implementing broad and ambitious domestic reforms to foster innovation and entrepreneurship. Moreover, she urged member countries to maintain trade as a growth engine by establishing strong institutions, free and fair markets, and a stable macroeconomic environment.
Georgieva also stressed the importance of rebuilding fiscal space, reducing debt, and ensuring financial stability. She called for a reduction in global imbalances by encouraging countries with excessive surpluses, like China, to boost domestic demands and those with excessive deficits, like the United States, to reduce fiscal deficits and incentivize private savings. The IMF, she assured, remains committed to strengthening economic and financial stability and resolving balance of payment issues.
The IMF is also pursuing significant developments, including a comprehensive surveillance review to enhance the focus on trade policies and domestic reforms. Georgieva highlighted the ongoing review on conditionality, aimed at strengthening program design to better support member countries. She emphasized the necessity of mobilizing members to implement the PRGT reform and replenishing the ‘catastrophic payment and relief trust’ to assist low-income countries.
Georgieva concluded by reiterating the IMF’s commitment to helping countries navigate uncertainties and pursue emerging opportunities. She assured that the Fund would continue to provide detailed, country-specific advice and support to its members.
