Lagos: The Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) has highlighted that improved human living conditions play a crucial role in eradicating malaria in the country. This assertion was made by Dr. Adeola Olukosi, Director of Research at NIMR, during the December edition of the NIMR Monthly Media Chat.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Dr. Olukosi, who heads NIMR’s Malaria Research Group, emphasized the significant relationship between environmental factors and the persistence of malaria in various parts of the world. Malaria, transmitted through infected female Anopheles mosquitoes, continues to pose a serious public health threat in many tropical regions, despite significant progress made in some countries. Experts stress that living conditions remain a primary defense line against the disease.
Dr. Olukosi elaborated on how improved living conditions have contributed to the elimination of malaria in regions like the United States and southern Europe, where the disease was once endemic. She noted that beyond medical interventions such as Chloroquine and DDT, factors like colder climates and enhanced socioeconomic conditions played a more substantial role in eradicating the disease.
In regions where malaria remains prevalent, inadequate housing, poor sanitation, and conducive environmental conditions for vector breeding pose significant challenges. Dr. Olukosi noted that despite efforts to eliminate breeding grounds, water collection in natural settings persists, facilitating the propagation of the parasites.
She proposed that stakeholders should focus not only on medical and technological solutions but also on improving living standards to combat malaria effectively. Coordinated global efforts and policy reforms are essential for controlling malaria and other public health diseases.
Dr. Olukosi also highlighted the need for support from malaria-free regions, given the disease’s ability to cross borders. Additionally, she pointed out that malaria remains endemic in areas with certain genetic traits, such as the sickle cell gene, due to the parasites’ adaptation to such environments.
The researcher advised that Nigeria and other malaria-endemic regions should invest in better housing, sanitation, and infrastructure for long-term benefits in the fight against malaria. She outlined the various tools available for malaria control, including treatment, case management, vector control, and prevention, which NIMR actively researches and supports.
Prof. John Obafunwa, Director-General of NIMR, also spoke on the challenges posed by the misdiagnosis of fever as malaria in Nigeria. He noted that this practice contributes to drug resistance and delays treatment for other illnesses. Community habits often equate any fever with malaria, complicating efforts to address the disease.
Prof. Obafunwa highlighted the impact of social factors such as gender, economic status, and occupational exposure on malaria prevention and treatment. He stressed the need for interventions that address both medical and social dimensions, underscoring the importance of understanding local populations’ everyday lives and vulnerabilities.
