Post: Improved Sanitation Facilities Boost School Attendance for Girls in Eleme

Eleme: Good sanitation practices have significantly enhanced girls’ attendance at school, as revealed by a recent initiative focusing on Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) undertaken by the Youth Empowerment Foundation (YEF). The project targeted upgrading sanitation facilities and addressing the social challenges faced by schoolgirls during their menstrual periods.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the initiative, led by Eleme, highlighted the importance of improved school toilets and hand-washing facilities. These upgrades not only boosted girls’ attendance but also encouraged mutual support among students. Eleme emphasized that inadequate sanitation facilities previously deterred girls from attending school during their periods, as they faced challenges in discarding sanitary pads and maintaining hygiene.

The program also fostered a change in how boys interacted with girls facing menstrual challenges in target schools. Eleme noted a positive shift in behavior, with boys beginning to understand and sup
port their female peers, a change facilitated by feedback from schools.

Community facilitators were recognized for their leadership roles in managing the program, reflecting the collaborative approach taken by the project team. Eleme expressed hope that the project’s success could be replicated in other schools, with lessons learned compiled for broader dissemination.

Mrs. Iwalola Akin-Jimoh, Executive Secretary of YEF, noted the profound impact of the MHM program on both girls and boys. She highlighted the involvement of various partners in achieving the project’s goals and acknowledged the efforts of teachers and stakeholders. Akin-Jimoh stressed the importance of continued support to ensure the project’s completion and success.

NAN reported that students, including 12-year-old Akinbide Aneezat from Ajumoni Junior Secondary School, have benefitted from the program, learning to make reusable sanitary towels and applying this knowledge to their personal hygiene.
