Washington: The U.S. has ramped up its military presence in the Middle East to safeguard American forces from potential threats, according to Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Rubio clarified on Sunday that the move is not indicative of an impending attack on Iran.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Rubio emphasized the strategic positioning of U.S. forces in the region, stating, “We are postured in the region for one simple reason, and that is that we understand that there could be threats to our forces in the region.” He underscored Washington’s intent to ensure adequate defense capabilities, should any threats materialize.
In response to inquiries about the Trump administration’s intentions regarding potential military action against Iran or the removal of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Rubio highlighted President Donald Trump’s preference for diplomatic solutions and negotiated settlements. Rubio noted the complexity of dealing with Iran, stating that political decisions there are often driven by theological considerations, and acknowledged the challenges of reaching a successful agreement with the nation.
The U.S. previously conducted attacks on Iran without congressional approval, which sparked objections from some lawmakers who argued there was no imminent threat justifying such actions. Rubio assured that the administration intends to comply with U.S. laws concerning congressional involvement in military decisions, though current discussions are focused on negotiations rather than military actions.
The U.S. has bolstered its military presence by deploying the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group and is reportedly planning to send the USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier amidst escalating tensions with Tehran. Special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are engaged in important meetings in the Middle East, with further developments expected.
Rubio reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to following legal protocols, stating that any change in the situation would be made evident, and necessary legal measures would be observed.
