Abuja:An Indian company and two international agencies are set to invest in infrastructure development across regional development commissions, According to Federal Government.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the Minister of State for Regional Development, Uba Ahmadu, stated that the ministry has initiated working arrangements with the three potential investors and is in discussions to formalize these partnerships through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
Ahmadu noted that these discussions with prospective investors took place following engagements with international donor agencies and business organizations during the 2026 United Nations General Assembly in New York. The ministry is exploring several investment opportunities, such as the proposed North-East Regional Airline, North-East Rail Project, and a regional power company.
Among the discussed projects is the regional airline, which aligns with agreements made by North-East governors during a recent meeting in Maiduguri. The proposed North-East Power Company aims to generate 40 megawatts of electricity from Kiri Dam in Adamawa and supply it to the national grid, enhancing the region’s electricity availability.
Discussions on the power project are at an advanced stage, with electricity generation identified as a key investment opportunity for the region. Ahmadu encouraged Nigerian investors to seize investment opportunities within the regional development commissions rather than relying solely on foreign partners.
The minister also highlighted thermal energy as a potential investment area, capable of generating substantial revenue for the commissions. The commissions will not engage directly in commercial activities but will foster an enabling environment for private sector investment.
The approach is intended to increase revenue and strengthen the commissions’ financial capacity, facilitating their development mandates. Revenue generated from investments is expected to sustain commission activities, especially when traditional funding sources are insufficient.
Ahmadu emphasized the ministry’s proactive pursuit of investment opportunities to bolster the commissions’ financial stability and support continued infrastructure development in their regions.
