Enugu: The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Friday commenced a three-day training program for Supervisory Presiding Officers (SPOs) in preparation for the Enugu North Senatorial District by-election scheduled for June 20. The training, held in Enugu, was inaugurated by Dr Chukwuemeka Chukwu, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for the state, who emphasized the importance of the election, which will take place across 1,488 polling units in the six local council areas comprising the district.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the council areas involved in the by-election are Nsukka, Igbo-Eze North, Igbo-Eze South, Udenu, Igbo-Etiti, and Uzo-Uwani. These areas collectively encompass 102 Registration Areas (RAs). Dr Chukwu highlighted the significance of thorough preparation due to the district’s vastness and the essential roles that INEC staff and ad-hoc staff will play in ensuring a successful election process.
Dr Chukwu outlined the expectations for the SPOs, emphasizing their crucial role in the by-election’s success. The commission anticipates a high level of commitment, discipline, integrity, and professionalism from all participants throughout the training exercise. The SPOs will receive comprehensive training on electoral processes, procedures, operational guidelines, and technology-driven election management systems, equipping them with the necessary knowledge and skills for their responsibilities during the election.
Dr Chukwu cautioned that participation in the training does not automatically result in deployment as a Supervisory Presiding Officer. At the conclusion of the training, participants will be evaluated based on their attendance, performance, understanding of the electoral process, practical exercises, and overall conduct. Only those who demonstrate competence and satisfactory performance will be considered for engagement as SPOs for the upcoming by-election.
The REC also encouraged the prospective SPOs to showcase their ability to effectively perform their duties and assist in training Presiding Officers (POs) and Assistant Presiding Officers (APOs). Successful candidates must possess a sound understanding of electoral procedures, as well as strong leadership and communication skills, to guide and supervise other election officials.
