Ilorin: The Sarkin Fulani of Kwara, Alhaji Abdullahi Mahmud, has called upon the Kwara Government to formally recruit local Fulani youths as vigilantes and forest guards to help tackle the rising insecurity in the state. Mahmud made this appeal during a news conference held in Ilorin, coinciding with a meeting for Fulani people in Kwara and South-West Nigeria.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Mahmud highlighted the unique understanding that the nomadic Fulani community has of the forest terrain, which he believes surpasses that of external security forces. He urged the state government to bolster security presence and enhance community-based policing efforts.
Mahmud shared a personal account of insecurity, revealing that his younger brother’s wife and three children were abducted by suspected kidnappers who are demanding ?60 million for their release. He condemned the frequent attacks on his community, citing incidents of armed bandits invading homes, killing residents, and disrupting daily life.
The Fulani community leader stressed the importance of collaboration between communities and the police, supported by local intelligence and government assistance, as the most effective strategy to restore peace. He expressed frustration at the criminal labeling of his community, stating that these criminals are unknown to them and damage their reputation.
In addition to addressing insecurity, Mahmud brought attention to the challenges faced by pastoralists due to insufficient grazing land. He urged the authorities to provide designated grazing areas to prevent conflict and safeguard livelihoods. He emphasized the community’s peaceful nature and their commitment to being law-abiding citizens.
Mahmud called for swift government action to rescue abducted victims, restore security, and address the longstanding land and safety issues affecting the Fulani community.
