Abuja: Leaders of Izombe, an oil-bearing community in Oguta Local Government Area of Imo, have appealed to the Federal and State Governments to urgently intervene in the provision of basic infrastructure to improve the living conditions of the people. Mr. Valentine Onwuka, Chairman of the Izombe Central Union (ICU) Abuja Branch, and Chief Vitus Egwuagu, a Patron of the union, made the appeal during their End of Year Get Together in Abuja.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Onwuka expressed concerns over the underdevelopment in the community despite its status as an oil-producing area. He highlighted the absence of essential amenities such as good roads, schools, electricity, and other social infrastructure, describing the situation as unacceptable. Onwuka emphasized that these necessities are rights for an oil-producing community and are crucial for enhancing life in Izombe.
Onwuka further noted the environmental damage caused by gas flaring and oil-related activities, which have destroyed economic trees in the area. He lamented the lack of benefits typically associated with oil-producing communities, such as scholarships and community development projects from oil companies. Onwuka expressed concern over the impact of neglect on education, pointing out that many government schools in the area are understaffed.
He urged for inclusive and reconciliatory leadership to prevent further division and hardships within the community. Onwuka praised Rep. Eugene Dibiagwu for sponsoring their end-of-year event and commended other community leaders for their efforts in promoting unity and development in Izombe.
Chief Vitus Egwuagu also appealed to the government to address the infrastructural decay, particularly the deteriorating Izombe/Ogbaku road. He recalled that the road was constructed in 1979 and has suffered due to heavy usage by oil trucks. Egwuagu, a retired Deputy Managing Director of the News Agency of Nigeria, emphasized the peaceful nature of the community and the absence of federal institutions in the area. He urged the government to reconsider and take meaningful actions for Izombe’s development.
