Abuja: A former INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, has urged the adoption of a transformative, value-driven leadership that places national interest above personal gains to enhance Nigeria’s status globally. Jega made this call during the launch of a book titled ‘Transformative Leadership in Practice,’ authored by Prof. Abubakar Sulaiman, Director-General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS).
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the book launch was part of the events marking Sulaiman’s 60th birthday. Jega highlighted that Nigeria’s development and democratic stability would remain challenging until the nation embraced transformative leadership. He emphasized that Sulaiman’s work at NILDS serves as evidence that transformative leadership is effective, stating that leadership should be driven by service rather than self-interest.
During the event, Vice-President Kashim Shettima highlighted Sulaiman’s legacy in nurturing future leaders and building institutional resilience. Represented by Mr. Johnson Adekunle, the Special Adviser to the President on Job Creation, Shettima noted that Sulaiman’s leadership demonstrated how mentorship and vision could strengthen governance and national development.
Former President Goodluck Jonathan, represented by Muhammed Adoke, a former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, praised Sulaiman as an institution builder. Jonathan noted that Sulaiman’s leadership at the National Planning Commission brought professionalism and structure to national policy coordination, resulting in immediate impacts such as reforms, efficiency, and accountability.
Former Senate President, Sen. Ahmad Lawan, commended Sulaiman as a reformer who transformed ideas into action, redefining the institute as a hub of knowledge and innovation. The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, emphasized that Nigeria’s crisis is not one of intellect but integrity, commending Sulaiman for his high integrity and noting that moral leadership remains possible in public life.
In response, Sulaiman expressed his gratitude for the goodwill and kind wishes extended to him on his 60th birthday, stating that these would motivate him to continue serving the country and humanity.
