Maryland: The Senator representing Abia North Senatorial District, Orji Uzor Kalu, has called on Nigerians living abroad to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election campaign in 2027. He emphasized that the economic reforms implemented by Tinubu’s administration have strengthened the Nigerian economy, urging support despite opposing the reinstatement of the petroleum subsidy.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Kalu addressed a gathering of Nigerians in the Diaspora in Maryland, United States, where he answered questions about Nigeria’s economy and the current administration’s reforms. He articulated that the benefits of economic reforms take time to manifest, praising President Tinubu for making difficult decisions to stabilize the economy, citing examples from nations like Singapore.
Kalu highlighted the administration’s focus on stabilizing the political environment and fostering economic activity. He noted that while macroeconomic improvements have been achieved, challenges at the microeconomic level persist, particularly due to insecurity in various regions, hindering daily activities like farming and work.
The senator voiced strong opposition to restoring the petroleum subsidy, arguing that it has historically been a source of corruption. Drawing from his political and business experience, Kalu advocated for alternative measures to alleviate economic hardships without reverting to subsidies.
Kalu pointed out the misuse of the former subsidy regime, claiming it benefited fraudulent companies and resulted in unnecessary spending. He praised President Tinubu for making a tough but necessary decision to remove the subsidy, which he believes has reduced wasteful spending.
While defending the administration’s reforms, Kalu acknowledged the need for further efforts, especially in enhancing security and fostering economic growth. He called for a transition from stabilization to growth, emphasizing the importance of security in enabling productive economic activities.
Kalu urged Nigerians to avoid fragmenting political support along ethnic lines in the upcoming elections, advocating for unity and consolidation under the APC. He stressed that Nigeria’s challenges require cooperation, not division, and called for greater unity and compassion among citizens.
In addition to supporting Tinubu, Kalu endorsed Dr. Obafemi Hamzat as the next governor of Lagos State, commending his experience and understanding of governance. Kalu expressed confidence in Hamzat’s ability to lead Lagos and contribute to building a more inclusive Nigeria.
