Lagos: The Forum of Local Government Area Chairmen of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Lagos State has issued a strong appeal to the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), urging them to respect the votes cast by members during the governorship primary. The forum emphasized the importance of adhering to democratic principles and internal party democracy.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the appeal was made through a communiqu© released after an emergency meeting held in Surulere. This meeting was convened to address concerns arising from the recent primary elections. The communiqu©, which was signed by Anaere Ugochukwu, the Chairman of the forum, and Mr. Oluwabukola Okeowo, the Secretary, highlighted the presence of no fewer than 15 ADC LGA Chairmen.
The chairmen expressed their confidence in the leadership of the State ADC Chairman, Mr. George Ashiru, and the State Executive Committee. They urged the state leadership to remain focused and to continue fulfilling its responsibilities as outlined in the party’s constitution and manifesto. The forum underscored the significance of the governorship primary in shaping the party’s prospects ahead of the 2027 general election.
The forum noted that while the State Assembly, House of Representatives, and Senatorial primaries were conducted successfully, they were concerned about discrepancies in the announced results of the governorship primary held on May 22. The chairmen alleged that the declared results did not accurately reflect the votes recorded during the exercise, leading to dissatisfaction among party members and supporters.
The chairmen also questioned reports of aspirants being denied recognition due to clearance issues despite participating in the process. They argued that the disqualification of candidates who met the stipulated requirements should be transparent and follow due process. According to available records, Princess Abiodun Oyefusi received 8,489 votes, Dr. Afeez Olasunkanmi Salis secured 7,594 votes, and Mr. Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour garnered 4,545 votes.
The forum stressed the importance of internal democracy for the party’s credibility and future electoral success. They warned that any action perceived as disregarding members’ mandates could weaken confidence in the party. The forum called on the National Secretariat and the NWC of the ADC to urgently review the issues arising from the Lagos Governorship Primary and ensure justice is served in accordance with the party’s constitution and democratic principles.
The chairmen urged the national leadership to prioritize unity and avoid actions that could lead to legal disputes and internal divisions. They emphasized that the party should focus on strengthening existing structures rather than creating controversies, as fairness and transparency would enhance ADC’s credibility before the electorate.
The forum also expressed concerns over security challenges in the country, citing incidents of kidnappings and attacks affecting schools and communities. They called on security agencies to intensify efforts to secure the release of kidnapped victims and urged the government to prioritize the protection of lives and property.
Additionally, the chairmen addressed recent party resolutions and cautioned against distorting existing party structures. They advocated for consolidation from national to ward levels and called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to ensure impartiality and timely distribution of Permanent Voter Cards.
The forum reiterated its commitment to the unity, growth, and success of ADC in Lagos State and across Nigeria, expressing optimism that the party could provide credible leadership and governance for Nigerians.
