Lagos: The Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has announced its plans to recruit approximately 300 environmental personnel to enhance the enforcement of proper waste management and environmental sanitation across the state. This initiative was revealed by the Managing Director of LAWMA, Dr. Olumuyiwa Gbadegesin, during a courtesy visit to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Dr. Gbadegesin stated that the recruitment comes after securing the approval from the state Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu. The newly employed environmental personnel will be responsible for frontline enforcement, focusing on educating residents about proper waste management. Those who fail to comply will face penalties, emphasizing the need for behavioural change towards sanitation.
Dr. Gbadegesin highlighted that the agency’s efforts go beyond waste clearing, aiming at addressing systemic behavioural changes among the populace. He mentioned that 26 individuals had been arrested recently for open defecation, demonstrating LAWMA’s commitment to enforcing sanitation laws. The recruited personnel will first educate the public, and any non-compliance will result in punishment.
LAWMA plans to employ a variety of strategies to enhance waste management, focusing on both infrastructure and human behaviour. The agency has also extended its advocacy department to work closely with communities and local governments. This collaboration involves Community Development Committees and PSP operators, supported by a newly established waste management task force, to ensure effective waste management and sanitation across Lagos State.
