Abuja: The Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria (LGAN) has appointed Chief Dr. Ogwu Onoja as the Patron and Ambassador for the upcoming 2026 All Africa Challenge Trophy (AACT). Onoja received a plaque recognizing his unwavering support and dedication to promoting women’s golf in Nigeria and throughout Africa.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Chief Onoja, who holds the title of Senior Advocate of Nigeria and is the Agenyi-Attah of Igala Kingdom, received the appointment letter in Abuja from LGAN President Lami Ahmed. Ahmed expressed the association’s honor in having Onoja serve in these roles, noting that the championship is scheduled for November 1-7 at the IBB International Golf and Country Club in Abuja, with participation expected from over 30 African countries.
Ahmed highlighted Onoja’s reputation as a respected leader whose influence would foster partnerships and bolster confidence among stakeholders. She outlined his responsibilities as Patron and AACT Ambassador, which include providing strategic g
uidance, attending key events, and promoting LGAN’s objectives. Onoja will also work to mobilize national support for the tournament, aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope sports agenda.
The LGAN President pointed out that Nigeria had previously hosted the AACT in 1996 and 2010, and the 2026 championship would further demonstrate the country’s capability and leadership. In response, Onoja emphasized the unifying power of sports in Nigeria and globally. He shared his belief in the role of sports in promoting health, discipline, and social development, and expressed his long-standing passion for golf, citing his 12-year membership at the IBB International Golf and Country Club.
Onoja described the AACT as a significant event, underscoring the need for strong encouragement and institutional backing for women’s participation in sports. He praised the leadership of LGAN for their commitment to national glory and pledged his support for a successful championship. Concluding his remarks, he expressed
gratitude for the honor and assured his full support for the event.
