Abuja: Mazariyya Books Ltd., a publishing company based in Abuja, has entered a contract agreement with the Cyprian Ekwensi Foundation for the posthumous publication of “In My Time,” the autobiography of the late iconic Nigerian writer, Chief Cyprian Ekwensi. This agreement was signed by Mr. Ahmed Maiwada, chairman of Mazariyya Books Ltd., and Chiedu Ekwensi, chairman of the Cyprian Ekwensi Foundation.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the collaboration aims to bring Ekwensi’s literary works to a broader audience, especially those who appreciate his contributions but have yet to explore his initial novella. The partnership will also see the posthumous release of Ekwensi’s first published fiction, “When Love Whispers,” which was originally published in 1948 and has since been out of print. This romantic novella explores themes of love, betrayal, and societal expectations within the context of Nigerian society.
The autobiography “In My Time,” edited by Prof. Ernest Emenyonu, a renowned African literature critic, is expected to be published in February 2026. The partnership has also committed to reviving “When Love Whispers” for contemporary readers. During the signing ceremony, Mr. Maiwada expressed his enthusiasm for collaborating with the legacy of Ekwensi through his son, Mr. Chiedu Ekwensi, affirming their commitment to preserving and promoting these literary works.
Maiwada emphasized the significance of publishing Ekwensi’s works, noting the importance of maintaining their integrity and ensuring accessibility to interested readers. He acknowledged the challenges in cost and piracy facing the publishing industry in Nigeria and called for government action to make printing more affordable. Maiwada highlighted the importance of telling Nigerian stories to foster global understanding and appreciation, particularly among the Nigerian diaspora.
Chiedu Ekwensi expressed his satisfaction with the agreement, noting that the autobiography offers insights into Ekwensi’s early life and formative experiences. He thanked the publisher for the opportunity and expressed hope that the objectives of the contract would be realized.
Patrick Oguejiofor, former Chairman of the Association of Nigerian Authors, also shared his excitement about the agreement, underscoring the enduring legacy of great writers like Ekwensi. He emphasized the importance of making these works accessible to Nigerian readers, who are known for their avid reading habits.
