Ile-ife: The Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund (MDGIF) has inaugurated a new Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) refuelling facility at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife. This initiative aims to enhance gas availability and reduce transportation costs, marking a significant advancement in MDGIF’s efforts to stimulate investments across Nigeria’s gas value chain and increase domestic gas usage.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the Executive Director of MDGIF, Mr. Oluwole Adama, highlighted the project as a tangible representation of Nigeria’s commitment to a gas-based energy transition. Mr. Adama emphasized that the facility is not merely a refuelling station but a symbol of progress, partnership, and purpose in promoting cleaner energy solutions and aligning with national energy objectives. The MDGIF was established to stimulate investments in midstream and downstream gas infrastructure through equity partnerships with private investors, aiming to enhance environmental sustainability and deliver socio-economic benefits to Nigerians.
Prof. Adebayo Bamire, Vice-Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University, praised the initiative for serving both the university and surrounding community. He noted that the project would foster research, practical learning, and innovation in alternative fuels, while also strengthening relations with the host community and promoting sustainable transport.
Similarly, Mr. Akinnola Fola, the Group Managing Director/CEO of FEMADEC Group, affirmed the company’s commitment to providing safe and scalable CNG infrastructure across the nation. The OAU CNG project is designed to lower transport costs and pollution on campus, promote cleaner mobility, and expand access to gas infrastructure within the university and its neighboring areas.
The project also includes the provision of CNG buses and vehicle conversion services for students, staff, and the local community, supporting practical research and innovation in gas-powered transport solutions. In a bid to support clean transportation, the First Lady of Nigeria, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, donated 50 CNG-powered buses, while PiCNG contributed 10 CNG-powered tricycles, further enhancing the initiative’s impact.
