Abuja: A medical expert, Dr. Lateef Salako, has attributed misinformation and late detection as primary factors responsible for the high mortality rate associated with cancer cases in Nigeria. Salako, a Consultant Oncologist at the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, discussed these issues during the 2025/2026 Recognition Day, Walimah, and graduation ceremony of MIMBAR Schools in Ibadan.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Salako delivered a lecture at the event, highlighting the prevalence of misinformation, including unfounded tales about cancer. He noted that many patients, due to such false information, delay seeking hospital diagnosis and treatment. The oncologist emphasized that early detection and treatment remain the most effective means to cure cancer. He stated that cancer could be treated at stages I and II, but survival chances are significantly reduced at stages III and IV.
Salako explained that delayed treatment often results from misinformation, with patients advised against chemotherapy, surg
ery, or other evidence-based treatments. Consequently, many seek alternative help, wasting valuable time. The consultant also noted that cancer could affect anyone, including unborn babies.
During the event, the Director of MIMBAR Schools, Mr. Akinwale Akinlabi, reiterated the school’s commitment to instilling strong moral and ethical values based on Islamic principles in students. He emphasized the unique combination of academic excellence and Islamic values to nurture well-rounded individuals.
Akinlabi commended parents for their support, noting the school’s growing population despite challenges. He expressed gratitude for parental support in overcoming these challenges and pledged to continue building on the successes of the past session.
The Chairman of the occasion, Mr. Akinkunmi Ajisafe, urged parents to balance their focus between their children’s academic performance and moral development. He linked societal issues in Nigeria to the neglect of moral upbringing, advocating for a combination of acade
mics and moral values to improve society.
The special guest, Alhaji Cyril Idemudia, praised the school for enhancing both Islamic and western education for his children since their enrollment two years ago. Miss Ameerah Erale, the best graduating student, attributed her success to divine support, constant reading, and the encouragement of her parents and teachers.
The ceremony featured the unveiling of the school yearbook, drama performances, certificate and award presentations, among other highlights.
