Abuja: The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) is set to embark on an intensive promotion of gender equality and children’s rights in Nigeria. This development follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding to partner with Plan International, a non-governmental organization, in Abuja.
According to Voice of Nigeria, the partnership aims to empower women and girls through advocacy, capacity-building initiatives, and quality journalism. Speaking at the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Plan International, the National President of the Nigerian Association of Women Journalists, Mrs. Aisha Ibrahim, emphasized that the partnership seeks to promote gender equality, uphold children’s rights, and support vulnerable groups, including persons with disabilities.
Mrs. Ibrahim highlighted the organization’s commitment to advocating for societal and humanitarian issues, particularly focusing on Persons of Concern (POCs), including Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVCs), victims of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (GBV), and Polio Eradication Awareness Campaigns. She stated that the partnership is a declaration of a united vision to create a world where children and girls can thrive, have their voices heard, and have their rights upheld.
The President also noted that Plan International has been at the forefront of advancing children’s rights and equality for girls. The collaboration on the ASPIRE project will implement strategic capacity-building initiatives to empower Local Women Rights and Youth Led Organizations, enhancing their skills. The media’s role in shaping narratives and influencing public perception will be leveraged to elevate the voices of these organizations and ensure their messages reach a broader audience.
Earlier, the Country Director of Plan International, Charles Usie, represented by the Director of Program Quality and Influencing, Helen Idiong, expressed delight over the partnership. He commended NAWOJ for its commitment to amplifying the voices of women, girls, and children’s rights over the years, stressing that with the signing of the MoU, NAWOJ will achieve even more in this regard.
The National President was accompanied by the Vice President NAWOJ Zone D, Mrs. Chizoba Ogbeche, National Board of Trustees from Zone D, Ms. Anna Daniel, and NAWOJ FCT Executive and members.
