Abuja: The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has firmly stated that no inmate was robbed of valuables during a recent search operation at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kuje.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the clarification was made by the service’s Public Relations Officer, CSC Jane Osuji, who addressed the issue in a statement. Osuji labeled claims that an inmate was robbed of valuables worth over N120 million as inaccurate and misrepresentative of the operational standards and procedures governing the nation’s custodial facilities.
Osuji explained that the activity at the Kuje custodial centre was a standard security search. All prohibited items discovered were appropriately processed and documented. ‘The exercise is conducted professionally and in line with extant standard operating procedures aimed at maintaining security, order, discipline, and the integrity of custodial operations,’ she stated.
She further emphasized that the NCoS follows strict regulations that prohibit inmates from keeping unauthorized personal items and large sums of money while in custody. All personal belongings declared by inmates are systematically documented and safeguarded until their discharge or lawful release.
Osuji also noted that there was no record from the custodial centre indicating that the alleged items were declared upon admission or found during the search operation. ‘There is no official record supporting the allegation that the said prohibited valuables were in the custody of the inmate(s) within the facility,’ she clarified.
Highlighting the custodial regulations, Osuji stressed that the mentioned items are classified as prohibited contraband, and inmates are not allowed to keep them. Possession of such items within the facility is a violation of custodial rules.
Moreover, she stated that no theft complaint regarding the alleged items had been filed by any inmate or person at the centre, or through the official complaint channels available.
Osuji reiterated the NCoS’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring the safety and welfare of inmates. She assured that the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kuje remains calm, peaceful, and secure.
