Abuja: The Registrar of the National Examinations Council (NECO), Prof. Ibrahim Wushishi, has announced plans to deepen collaboration with the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) to enhance result verification and promote computer-based examinations across the country. Wushishi made this disclosure during a courtesy visit to NOUN in Abuja.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Wushishi emphasized that the partnership aims to safeguard the integrity of NECO certificates and ensure that only candidates with authentic results are admitted into NOUN. He extended his congratulations to the NOUN Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Uduma Oji Uduma, on his appointment, acknowledging him as a seasoned administrator with proven academic integrity. The visit aimed to formally felicitate with the vice-chancellor and explore collaboration on result authentication through NECO’s e-Verify platform. Discussions also included potential cooperation in computer-based testing.
Wushishi highlighted NECO’s shift from manual to electronic result verification, noting that the introduction of the NECO e-Verify system two years ago has significantly transformed the process. Nearly five million results have been verified electronically through the platform. The API integration allows institutions to seamlessly confirm the authenticity of candidates’ NECO results without delay. Wushishi encouraged NOUN to adopt the platform to enhance its admission screening process.
The NOUN Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Uduma, expressed support for the initiative and assured NECO of the university’s readiness to collaborate. He emphasized the importance of result verification in maintaining academic integrity, stating that unverified certificates lack credibility. With an annual admission of about 40,000 students, NOUN is committed to ensuring all admitted candidates present authentic credentials. Prof. Uduma revealed that the university plans to integrate with the NECO e-Verify platform starting from the 2026 admission cycle. He also expressed NOUN’s willingness to support NECO’s expansion in computer-based testing, highlighting its network of 128 study centres nationwide.
