A Zamfara-based NGO, Ta’awanul Khairiyya-Voice of Women and Child Initiative, has sensitised 100 women in the state on Gender Based Violence (GBV) issues and women participation in leadership.
Speaking at the event on Monday, the State Coordinator of the NGO, Hajiya Shafa’atu Labbo said the programme aimed at increasing women awareness on dangers associated with GBV.
The sensitisation, organised in collaboration with Gender Awareness Trust (GAT), took place at Kaura Namoda town, Kaura Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara.
‘This is also to encourage women participation in politics and leadership affairs considering the fact that women are left behind in various opportunities.
‘We believe this programme will enhance the capacity of our women in reporting GBV cases.
‘We invited various resource persons from security agencies, religious leaders, teachers and health workers to educate the participants on dangers associated with GBV,’ she said.
Labbo added that the organisation was working to protect wome
n and children’s rights against GBV and other violence that become rampant in the society.
‘We are working with various organisations to educate and enhance women’s capacity on their rights.
‘We decided to take the sensitisation to Kaura Namoda in order to reach out to more women from grassroots.
‘You know women and children especially in the rural communities faced a lot of challenges,’ she said.
According to her, most of the women don’t even know their rights, they don’t know how to protect themselves from such dangers.
The coordinator commended the Emir of Kaura Namoda, heads of security agencies in the area including Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), DSS, health workers and women groups for participating in the event.
In his speech, the Emir of Kaura Namoda, Alhaji Sanusi Ahmad-Asha, represented by Alhaji Sule Yarima, lauded the organisation for finding Kaura Namoda worthy to host the programme.
While describing the event as apt, Ahmad-Asha observed that the sensitisation wo
uld go a long way in enlightening women on dangers associated with GBV.
‘I am using this opportunity to call on parents to train and educate their children on dangers of GBV to enable them know much about their rights and negative effects of the menace in the society,’ he said.
The royal father assured the support of traditional institutions towards consistent women enlightenment in the fight against GBV among other related challenges.
