Abuja: The Nigerian Communications Satellite Ltd. (NigComSat) has partnered with MySmartMedic, a subsidiary of Uniccon Group of Companies, to provide digital healthcare solutions to underserved rural communities across Nigeria. This collaboration was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding signed at Uniccon Group’s headquarters in Abuja.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, NigComSat’s Managing Director, Mrs. Jane Nkechi Egerton-Idehen, emphasized that the initiative aims to connect Nigeria’s most remote communities using satellite technology. The project is focused on reaching the 70 percent of Nigerians residing in rural areas, highlighting the necessity for digital health services to extend beyond urban centers. Egerton-Idehen noted the unique capability of NigComSat to provide connectivity in areas where other services cannot reach, asserting that satellite coverage is crucial for the initiative’s success.
Chairman of Uniccon Group, Prof. Chuks Ekwueme, explained that this initiative is part of a larger technological vision that includes deploying humanoid robots to address Africa’s challenges. He described MySmartMedic as a digital health platform designed to make healthcare more accessible and affordable, with a focus on local content and inclusivity. The platform allows users to describe symptoms in their native languages and receive medical guidance in familiar terms. Ekwueme highlighted the importance of the partnership with NigComSat, using satellite connectivity to access underserved communities, and expressed optimism about transforming healthcare delivery in Nigeria and beyond.
The rollout of this initiative is set to begin in Nasarawa, Yobe, Borno, and Zamfara states. Ekwueme stated that the collaboration aims to empower unconnected areas with innovative products, emphasizing the significance of local content in their offerings.
