Beijing: Nigeria has emerged as China’s largest engineering contracting market, a development unveiled by Li Hengtian, Deputy Director at the China International Communications Group (CICG), during the opening of a Seminar for Renowned Nigerian Commentators in Beijing. Li emphasized Nigeria’s significant role in China’s international economic landscape, highlighting it as the second-largest export market, the third-largest trading partner, and a major investment destination in Africa.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Li, who also serves as the Deputy Director of CICG’s Education and Training Centre, expressed optimism about the collaborative efforts between China and Nigeria, which aim to foster steady progress in various sectors. He noted the increasing number of Nigerian youths pursuing education in China and the influx of Chinese builders contributing to Nigeria’s development. This year marks a concerted effort by both nations to build a China-Nigeria community with a shared future.
Li further stressed the importance of media in overcoming prejudices and enhancing cooperation between the two countries. He urged journalists to dismantle the barriers of a singular narrative and collaboratively forge a new chapter in China-Nigeria relations. “Today, in Beijing at the beginning of summer, we are here precisely for stories – to tell China’s stories, to listen to Nigeria’s stories,” Li stated, underscoring the power of shared narratives in strengthening bilateral ties.
Representing the Nigerian delegation, Olunkwa Felix expressed gratitude for the seminar’s hospitality, describing it as an invaluable platform for learning, cultural exchange, and international cooperation. Felix highlighted China’s pivotal role in global development, innovation, and education, emphasizing the importance of such opportunities in enhancing global understanding and building enduring relationships.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the seminar includes participation from over 20 journalists and officials from Nigeria’s National Assembly and Foreign Affairs Ministry. The forum is attended by notable figures such as Mufutau Ojo, Editor-in-Chief of NAN; Musikilu Mojeed, Editor-in-Chief of Premium Times Newspaper; Dr. Iyobosa Uwugiaren, Editor (Abuja) of This Day Newspapers; and Reuben Okala, Head of Station at KaftanTV.
