London: Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, who initially rose to power as a military leader before transitioning to a democratic role, has died at the age of 82, an aide announced.
According to Nam News Network, Buhari initially governed Nigeria as a military ruler during the 1980s, later returning to lead the country as an elected official. He served two terms as president from 2015 to 2023.
The former president’s family confirmed his passing at a clinic in London. Garba Shehu, Buhari’s spokesman during his presidency, shared the news on social media, stating that Buhari passed away this afternoon.
Despite his efforts, Buhari’s tenure did not resolve Nigeria’s persistent issues with corruption and insecurity. The country, an oil-producing giant, also continued to face economic challenges during his leadership.
