Abuja: The Nigerian Legion has conferred the title of Grand Patron on the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo III, recognizing his support for military veterans and their families. The honour was presented during the legion’s national leadership visit to Ogun as part of its South-West tour.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the announcement came via a statement from Adetoro Soaga, Director of Corporate Affairs at the Nigerian Legion. The National Chairman of the Legion, Ms. Morenike Henry, highlighted the traditional ruler’s dedication to the welfare of ex-servicemen and community development. Henry emphasized the Alake’s role as a vital supporter for veterans within and outside the state.
Henry also appealed for stronger collaboration among stakeholders to enhance veteran welfare, urging support for policies and programs that improve their well-being. She advised veterans to maintain unity and discipline, underscoring dialogue’s role in resolving disputes.
The legion chairman reaffirmed her dedication to addressing welfare challenges, including pensions and allowances, and promised to engage with relevant authorities to tackle ongoing issues. She assured the families of fallen soldiers of continued support through empowerment initiatives.
In his response, Oba Gbadebo III praised Henry’s leadership and committed to ongoing support for the legion’s activities. Ogun State Chairman of the legion, Mariam Adebayo, commended the national leadership for engaging grassroots members and affirmed the state chapter’s backing.
Mrs. Oluwakemi Alao, Coordinator of the Military Widows Association in the state, praised empowerment programs aimed at improving widows’ livelihoods. The visit included an interaction with troops at the 35 Artillery Brigade, where Commander Brig.-Gen. Godwin Nwamba lauded the legion’s reforms and urged continued efforts to align with global best practices.
The tour is part of the legion’s broader strategy to strengthen connections with veterans and key stakeholders nationwide.
