Johannesburg: The Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA) has welcomed a High Court ruling in Gauteng, Johannesburg, that prohibits the anti-migrant group, Operation Dudula, from engaging in unlawful activities against foreign nationals.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the court’s decision prevents the group from obstructing foreign nationals’ access to schools and healthcare services, as well as from engaging in intimidation, harassment, and assault. This legal action was initiated by a coalition of civil society organizations under the banner of Kopanang Africa Against Xenophobia (KAAX).
NUSA, through a statement by its Secretary, Akindele Olunloyo, and President, Smart Nwobi, hailed the judgment as a crucial step for the rights and dignity of migrants in South Africa. The union emphasized that the ruling reinforces constitutional protections for all residents in South Africa, asserting that human dignity transcends nationality.
For the Nigerian community, which numbers over 50,000 in South Africa, this decision serves as a safeguard against xenophobic violence and discrimination. NUSA highlighted that the court’s interdiction of Operation Dudula’s activities is a testament to South Africa’s commitment to equality, non-discrimination, and access to essential services.
NUSA also urged the South African government to fulfill its duty to protect all residents, emphasizing the importance of implementing the National Action Plan to Combat Racism, Xenophobia, and Related Intolerance. The union reiterated its dedication to promoting unity and solidarity among marginalized communities, stressing that combating xenophobia requires collective effort across society.
