Post: NiMet and Adamawa State University Sign MoU to Enhance Weather Warnings and Climate Research

Abuja: The Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMet, and Adamawa State University have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen climate research and enhance the delivery of timely weather warnings. The agreement aims to improve real-time weather alerts and seasonal forecasts specifically tailored to farmers and communities in Adamawa State.

According to Voice of Nigeria, the collaboration also supports specialised training programs for students and practitioners, alongside joint publications addressing region-specific climate challenges. NiMet’s Director-General, Prof. Charles Anosike, emphasized the significance of academic collaboration in the effective dissemination of early warnings. He highlighted that the partnership aligns with the UN’s ‘Early Warning for All 2027’ initiative, which seeks to improve food security, protect lives and property, and build resilience against extreme weather events.

The key focus areas include climate data analysis, drought and flood monitoring, and integrating clim
ate science into community disaster preparedness. Adamawa State University Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Augustine Clement, committed to active participation through educational workshops, research internships, and outreach programs aimed at translating scientific findings into practical guidance for both the public and policymakers.

The collaboration underscores the vital role of partnerships between academia and agencies in assisting Nigeria to anticipate, respond to, and mitigate the impacts of climate change.
