Post: NPC Urges New Commissioners to Strengthen Census and Birth Registration Efforts


Abuja: The National Population Commission (NPC) has urged its newly inaugurated federal commissioners to strengthen preparations for Nigeria’s next population census and improve birth registration nationwide. NPC Chairman, Dr. Aminu Yusuf, emphasized the importance of these initiatives during the assumption of office ceremony for seven newly inaugurated federal commissioners.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the commissioners were formally inaugurated by President Bola Tinubu at a meeting of the Federal Executive Council before assuming their duties at the commission. Yusuf, represented by the Commissioner for Bayelsa, Mrs. Vivian Izonfuo, stated that the new commissioners were assuming office at a crucial time for Nigeria’s demographic development.

Dr. Yusuf addressed the commissioners, representing Sokoto, Kwara, Bauchi, Ekiti, Zamfara, Jigawa, and Katsina states, by highlighting the importance of accurate population data for national planning and development. He described the NPC as a strategic insti
tution tasked with conducting population and housing censuses, civil registration, and demographic surveys. The chairman noted that the commission serves as the principal adviser to the President on population-related matters and provides critical data required for sustainable development.

Yusuf expressed confidence in the new commissioners’ ability to enhance the commission’s capacity to deliver on its constitutional mandate. He emphasized that the data and statistics produced by the NPC are fundamental for evidence-based policymaking, equitable resource allocation, and efficient service delivery across Nigeria.

In response, Mr. Isiaka Yahaya, representing Kwara, pledged the commissioners’ commitment to supporting the commission’s programs and enhancing its national relevance. He acknowledged the commission’s achievements and challenges, affirming their readiness to collaborate toward achieving the NPC’s objectives. Yahaya stressed the importance of strengthening birth registration and generating quality d
emographic data to support national development.

He concluded by calling for national support for the NPC’s mission to ensure every Nigerian child receives a proper identity and to continue generating relevant data for sustainable development. Yahaya reiterated that the commission was established to provide data-driven guidance for Nigeria’s growth and prosperity.
