Abuja: Ms. Grace Ike, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, has been honoured with the Humanitarian Award for Excellence in Service in recognition of her positive contributions to society. The award was conferred by the Women of Glory Foundation, which described her as the ‘Most Active Journalistic Mobiliser,’ during a ceremony held in Abuja. This event was part of activities marking the 10th anniversary of the humanitarian organisation.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the Women of Glory Foundation is dedicated to providing support to vulnerable women, including widows, elderly women, and single mothers. The foundation focuses on empowerment programmes, mentorship, skills acquisition, healthcare support, and faith-based guidance. At the event, the Founder of the Foundation, Dr. Nneka Nzewi, shared that her personal childhood adversity and compassion inspired the initiative.
Dr. Nzewi recounted her experience of losing her father at a young age, leaving her mother to raise five children without any support system. She described watching her mother struggle daily for survival, providing for the family, and maintaining hope despite the odds. This experience led her to commit her life to supporting women facing similar challenges.
She further explained that the foundation now has members across all 36 states, actively engaging in humanitarian interventions and raising awareness on national development, gender-based violence, and socio-economic issues. During the award presentation, the organisers commended the NUJ FCT chairman for her leadership in mobilising journalists towards national interests.
In her response, Ike, represented by the Assistant Secretary of the NUJ FCT Council, Ms. Sharon Emephia, praised the foundation for its impactful work over the past decade. She noted, “Ten years of sustained impact is no small achievement. It reflects resilience, vision, and a deep commitment to service.”
The NUJ FCT chairman expressed her gratitude for the honour, stating that it would motivate the council to further advocate for societal progress. She emphasized, “I receive this honor with gratitude and humility. I see it not just as a personal award but as a reflection of the collective efforts of the NUJ FCT Council and the values we uphold in promoting truth, development, and societal progress.”
