Ilorin: Nutrients play a crucial role in strengthening the immune system, which helps the body prevent, fight, and recover from communicable diseases, according to Mr. Bashir Onifade, the Chairman of the Institute for Dietetics, Kwara State Chapter. Onifade made this statement while speaking on the sidelines of the commemoration of World Registered Dietitians and Nutritionist Day.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Onifade emphasized the day’s theme, ‘Discover the Power of Nutrition,’ highlighting the importance of nutrients in restoring immune function and reducing disease severity. He pointed out that nutritious foods have the ability to reverse deficiencies that make individuals more susceptible to infections. Onifade, who also serves as the Head of the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at the Kwara State University Teaching Hospital, stated that the day is dedicated to appreciating the roles of registered dietitians and nutritionists globally in disease prevention and health promotion.
Onifade further explained that dieticians and nutritionists educate people on making healthy choices through better nutrition. He warned that consuming unhealthy foods, such as junk foods, increases the risk of communicable diseases. He noted that a balanced diet offers numerous benefits, including boosting energy levels, supporting overall health, strengthening the immune system, and reducing the risk of chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers.
The nutrition expert disclosed that the number of malnourished children in Kwara has decreased due to state government efforts in administering micronutrients powder as a complementary meal for children. He encouraged Nigerians to seek guidance from professionals on maintaining a healthy diet.
Dr. Bankole Olugbenga, the State Nutrition Officer, also spoke on the importance of nutrients to the body, explaining that food is not just fuel but also a preventive measure against diseases and non-communicable diseases. Olugbenga called for more synergy and cooperation among association members to achieve common goals.
The programme included a courtesy visit to the Kwara State Primary Healthcare Development Agency and a donation of foods and commodities to the Waafah Children’s Home.
