Lagos: Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has commended Nigeria for securing the hosting rights for the fifth edition of the Intra-African Trade Fair 2027, describing the development as a major milestone for the country and the African continent. Obasanjo gave the commendation at the Wole Soyinka Centre for Arts and Culture during the signing of the host country agreement for the event in Lagos.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the fair is scheduled to take place from November 5 to November 11, 2027. The initiative aims to reduce the export of raw materials, promote global equity in trade relations, and increase Africa’s self-sufficiency and self-reliance. Obasanjo emphasized that the event would gather African governments, businesses, and investors to enhance trade, investment, and economic cooperation across the continent.
Obasanjo highlighted the historical significance of hosting the fair in Lagos, noting the city’s history of landmark economic agreements aimed at strengthening Africa’s development. He remarked on the relevance of Lagos as the location where African leaders signed the Lagos Plan of Action for the economic development of Africa. The initiative is expected to significantly reduce raw material exports and promote equitable trade relations.
He congratulated President Bola Tinubu and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for their efforts in securing Nigeria’s successful bid to host the trade fair. Obasanjo also acknowledged the contribution of both public and private sectors in ensuring Nigeria’s selection as the host for the continental event.
Obasanjo, who chairs the advisory council for the event, reaffirmed the council’s commitment to collaborating with partners and the host country to ensure the successful organization of the fair. He stated that the fair would serve as a platform to elevate Africa’s trade standards and support the continent’s economic transformation.
The initiative aligns with the African Union’s vision and its long-term development blueprint, Agenda 2063, which aims to foster continental integration and create a unified African market. Obasanjo expressed optimism that the 2027 edition of the trade fair would exceed previous editions in scope and impact. He emphasized the importance of thorough planning to ensure the event’s success and progress towards the desired future for Africa.
