Abeokuta: The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun has unveiled Dr Yemi Sowunmi-Kolapo as the party’s deputy governorship candidate for the 2027 gubernatorial election in the state. The state Party Chairman, Abayomi Tella, introduced Sowunmi-Kolapo at the party secretariat, marking a significant step in the party’s preparation for the upcoming elections.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Sowunmi-Kolapo expressed her commitment to restoring hope to Ogun State and described her candidacy as an opportunity for greater service to the people. She emphasized the PDP’s mission to provide governance that focuses on economic growth, youth empowerment, quality education, healthcare delivery, and infrastructural development. In her speech, Sowunmi-Kolapo stressed the importance of grassroots mobilisation and voter engagement for the party’s success, while also expressing gratitude to the party leadership for their confidence in her abilities.
The state party Chairman, Abayomi Tella, highlighted the broad support for Sowunmi-Kolapo’s nomination, noting that it was well-received across various regions of the state. Tella emphasized that the PDP’s revitalisation efforts were yielding positive results, strengthening the party’s position ahead of the 2027 elections. He attributed this development to the dedication of party leaders and members.
Oladipupo Adebutu, the PDP governorship candidate in Ogun, spoke about the party’s strengthened position and its readiness for the general elections. He reflected on the challenges faced in previous attempts to secure power and expressed confidence that the party was now better prepared. Adebutu highlighted the philanthropic contributions of prominent figures in Ogun State, including Sir Kensington Adebutu and Dame Caroline Oladunni Adebutu, whose investments in education, healthcare, and community development have benefitted many residents.
The event was attended by other party faithful, who described Sowunmi-Kolapo’s emergence as a major boost to the PDP’s campaign, citing her extensive experience, leadership qualities, and contributions to grassroots development.
Yemi Sowunmi-Kolapo is a notable media leader, accomplished businesswoman, author, and public affairs strategist. She founded Right-Dev Limited, a strategic communications and media consultancy firm, and serves as the publisher and editor-in-chief of The Point Newspaper. Sowunmi-Kolapo has held various significant roles, including serving as a Special Adviser on Corporate Communications and Strategy under former President Goodluck Jonathan.
Sowunmi-Kolapo is a distinguished member of professional bodies such as the Nigerian Guild of Editors and holds fellowships with the West African Society for Communications and Administration, and the Civilian Institute of Democratic Administration.
