Osogbo: The Osun Government has called on mothers and caregivers in the state to adopt exclusive breastfeeding practices as a measure to lower the risk of breast cancer. This appeal was made by Mr. Akeem Shuti, Principal Nutrition Officer of the State Primary Health Care Development Board, during a public enlightenment meeting focused on breastfeeding and nutrition awareness held in Osogbo.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the event was organized by the Ministry of Information and Public Enlightenment. Shuti highlighted that exclusive breastfeeding for the initial six months can significantly decrease the chances of breast and ovarian cancer in women. He further explained that this practice not only benefits mothers but also helps prevent newborns from developing conditions like jaundice and other diseases.
Shuti emphasized the role of exclusive breastfeeding in enhancing brain development and intellectual growth in children. He pointed out its importance in preventing sudden infant death syndrome, noting that infants exclusively breastfed are at a reduced risk of such outcomes.
Mrs. Yetunde Esan, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Economic Planning and Development, remarked that the state government anticipates mothers and caregivers will adhere to exclusive breastfeeding guidelines following the program. Represented by Mr. Gbadebo Iyanda, Director of Development Cooperation Development, Esan stated that exclusive breastfeeding also decreases child illness and prevents unplanned pregnancies. She added that it eliminates the need for infant formula, thereby easing economic burdens on families.
Esan also mentioned that breast milk is rich in antibodies, offering protection against infections for babies. Mr. Eniola Odeniyi, Special Adviser to the Governor on Public Enlightenment, assured that the state government would persist in efforts to educate mothers and caregivers on the significance of breastfeeding, underscoring the critical benefits of exclusive breastfeeding practices.
