Abuja: The outgoing Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Finance, Mrs. Lydia Jafiya, has emphasized the pivotal role played by the Ministry of Finance in maintaining national stability, highlighting it as the “engine room of the economy.” She made these remarks during her retirement and handover ceremony in Abuja.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Jafiya stressed the importance of unity and precision within the ministry, warning that any errors or internal discord could have broader societal impacts. “We must not drop the ball, finance have always been at the top of its affairs,” she stated, urging the management and staff to support the incoming Permanent Secretary, Mr. Raymond Omachi.
Reflecting on her career, Jafiya expressed gratitude for her experiences and support from key figures, including the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, and the Minister of State, Dr. Doris Anite. She described the ministry as a professional haven, commending the directors and staff for their unparalleled collaboration and team spirit, which she credited with overcoming various challenges.
Jafiya also acknowledged the media’s role in shaping public perception, thanking them for their fairness and positive coverage, which she believes greatly impacts the institution’s reputation. Additionally, she praised the unions for their steadfast commitment to staff welfare, encouraging them to maintain their focus on workers’ needs and extend their support to her successor, Mr. Omachi.
In his remarks, the new permanent secretary, Mr. Raymond Omachi, lauded Jafiya’s leadership and pledged to build on the strong foundation she established. He expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu, the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, and the Minister for entrusting him with the new role.
