Igboora: The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Oyo State has issued a stern warning to patent medicine dealers, emphasizing that they are not authorized to sell or prescribe antibiotics and certain other drugs. This announcement was made during a sensitization session with the National Association of Patent and Proprietary Medicine Dealers (NAPPMED) held in Igboora, Oyo State.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the Commander of Oyo State NDLEA, Lawal Adetula, represented by the NDLEA Deputy Commander of Narcotics, Toyin Ajanaku, highlighted that diabetic drugs, blood thinners, strong painkillers, cardiovascular, and psychotic drugs are among those that patent medicine dealers are not permitted to dispense. The agency warned that only licensed big pharmacies have the authorization to handle these controlled substances.
The NDLEA’s message was clear: patent medicine dealers are to refrain from selling or prescribing marijuana, cocaine, and other illicit drugs, which pose significant harm to individuals and society. The agency asserted its authority to arrest and prosecute anyone found violating these regulations.
During the session, the important role of patent medicine dealers in society was acknowledged, yet they were cautioned not to assume the role of doctors. The NDLEA underscored that they lack the right and training to handle controlled drugs.
In addition, NDLEA Chief Superintendent of Narcotics, Mercy Godwin, urged caution among dealers in dispensing drugs to avoid compromising patient health or risking legal consequences. The NDLEA will continue to monitor and inspect shops to ensure compliance with drug regulations, reinforcing its commitment to societal safety.
Mr. Segun Adeniyi, Chairman of NAPPMED’s Ibarapa Zone, expressed appreciation for the NDLEA’s efforts and pledged that members would comply with the established guidelines for drug sales and prescriptions.
