Abuja: The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dismissed reports of a leadership vacuum within its ranks following Thursday’s Supreme Court judgment. The party emphasized that Abdulrahman Mohammed remains the party’s legitimate National Chairman.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed, stated this at a news conference on Friday in Abuja. Mohammed clarified that the apex court’s ruling addressed only the legality of the Ibadan convention and did not impact the current National Working Committee (NWC).
Mohammed highlighted that the Supreme Court judgment nullified the illegal Ibadan Convention and dismissed the appeal filed by the Turaki-led purported NWC for lacking in merit. He underscored that the judgment did not involve any suspension or expulsion of party officers, as these issues were never part of the court’s deliberations.
He asserted that there has never been a leadership vacuum in the PDP, noting that the party’s structure remains intact under the leadership of Abdulrahman Mohammed and National Secretary, Sen. Samuel Anyanwu. Mohammed criticized attempts by certain groups to distort the Supreme Court judgment to mislead the public.
The party spokesperson also dismissed claims of a takeover by the Board of Trustees (BoT), labeling such moves as unconstitutional. Mohammed stated that the PDP Constitution does not empower the BoT to assume the functions of the NWC or take over party leadership.
Mohammed advised Sen. Adolphus Wabara, whose tenure as BoT Chairman had expired, to stop making statements on behalf of the PDP. He cautioned the media against portraying the party as factionalised and urged adherence to truth and legality, asserting that no factions exist in the PDP.
