Abuja: The Minister of Defence, retired Gen. Christopher Musa, has underscored the significance of physical fitness as a crucial factor in combat readiness and operational effectiveness for the Nigerian Armed Forces. Musa, represented by retired Rear Admiral Olu Bankole, made this statement during the 2026 celebration of the International Military Sports Council (CISM) Day held at the Aguyi Ironsi Cantonment in Abuja.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Musa emphasized that physical fitness extends beyond being a routine requirement, asserting that it is essential to the armed forces’ capacity to respond to threats swiftly and adapt to the ever-changing security landscape. He highlighted that sports play a vital role in instilling discipline, teamwork, endurance, and leadership, which are essential aspects of modern military operations.
While discussing the Nigerian military’s commitment to building a professional and resilient force, the minister noted the relevance of the CISM motto, “Friendship through Sports,” in fostering trust and cooperation in multinational operations and peace support missions. Musa urged participants to strengthen bonds within their services, across security institutions, and with international partners, while commending the armed forces for upholding the global tradition of CISM Day.
The event, organized by the Defence Headquarters in collaboration with CISM, featured a 5km walk and jog exercise along with other aerobics exercises. It brought together personnel from the armed forces and other security agencies, promoting inter-agency cooperation and unity.
Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, Chief of Defence Staff, represented by Rear Admiral Gideon Kachim, remarked on leveraging sports as a strategic tool for promoting physical fitness, combat readiness, discipline, and international military cooperation. He emphasized the importance of physical resilience, mental alertness, and emotional balance in contemporary warfare and security operations.
Maj.-Gen. Abdulahi Maikano, Vice President of the International Military Sport Council (CISM) and President of the African chapter, highlighted the importance of unity and cooperation among armed forces globally. He noted Nigeria’s longstanding contributions to CISM since joining in 1977 and expressed pride in the country hosting the Vice Presidency and Presidency of Africa.
Maikano extended an invitation to Nigerian athletes to participate in upcoming international military competitions, including the World Military Games in Colorado, USA, and praised the efforts of the Nigerian Chief Delegate, AVM Patrick Philips, in organizing the event.
