Jos: Dr Nicholas Baamlong, Plateau Commissioner for Health, announced a strategic collaboration between the Plateau State Government and Heifer International to establish a large cold room aimed at improving food storage and reducing contamination risks. This initiative was revealed during the State Ministry of Health’s commemoration of the 2025 World Food Safety Day, themed ‘Food Safety: Science in Action’.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the cold room facility, situated at the Farin Gada Market, is designed to assist traders in preserving their agricultural produce against bacterial, fungal, and parasitic infestations. Dr Baamlong highlighted the significance of this development, noting its contribution to enhancing food safety for Plateau citizens.
Dr Baamlong emphasized the critical role of the cold room in reducing food poisoning incidents by maintaining safe food temperatures that inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria. This measure is expected to significantly decrease the occurrence of foodborne illnesses by preventing the proliferation of dangerous microorganisms.
The commissioner also stressed the importance of applying good practices and communication throughout the food supply chain, from production to consumption, to ensure food safety. He remarked that the 2025 World Food Safety Day theme aptly underscores the role of science in managing and mitigating the risks posed by microorganisms in food.
Dr Baamlong concluded by asserting that food safety is a collective right and responsibility, requiring everyone’s effort to keep food safe and suitable for consumption.
The News Agency of Nigeria also reported that the ministry organized a sensitisation walk to raise awareness about the importance of maintaining food safety. Additionally, it was noted that World Food Safety Day is celebrated globally on June 7 each year.
