Abuja: President Bola Tinubu on Thursday declared that he had assured the United States and European partners of his administration’s commitment to implement state police to enhance security in Nigeria. This announcement was made during the 14th National Caucus meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) held at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, President Tinubu discussed at length with the U.S. and European partners, affirming that state police would be pivotal in improving security. He expressed confidence in his party’s support, emphasizing the critical role of political reconciliation and internal party cohesion at all levels. Tinubu highlighted the necessity of flexibility and tolerance for achieving stability and progress.
Drawing attention to the recent Supreme Court judgment on local government autonomy, President Tinubu urged APC leaders to ensure its implementation to strengthen grassroots governance. He stressed that autonomy would be futile if councils were not adequately funded, insisting that allocations should go directly to local governments. Tinubu called for serious leadership, noting the importance of strong governance at the local level for community stabilization. Additionally, he advocated for greater inclusion of women in party leadership roles.
Vice-President Kashim Shettima also addressed the caucus, emphasizing the importance of sustaining the APC’s growing dominance across Nigeria. He cautioned that maintaining success requires discipline, cohesion, and careful management of internal party democracy. Shettima highlighted the APC’s influence across the six geopolitical zones and its expanding reach in states led by new entrants and defectors. He reassured new governors in the APC of their welcome in the ruling party, reinforcing the party’s strength and unity.
