Abuja: President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, to lead consultations with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), the Ogoni community, and other stakeholders to finalise the framework for resuming oil production in Ogoniland, Rivers State. This directive followed the presentation of a report by the Presidential Committee on the Ogoni Consultations, chaired by Professor Don Baridam, at the State House in Abuja.
According to Voice of Nigeria, President Tinubu commended the committee for its dedication and urged the Ogoni people to engage in dialogue, assuring them of the government’s efforts to protect their environment. He acknowledged the long-standing struggles of the Ogoni people for justice and environmental protection, declaring that the government recognizes their hardships.
The President also instructed the Minister of Environment and the NSA to incorporate programmes into a broader dialogue and implementation process, aiming t
o address non-valuable assets and finalize operational modalities. Tinubu emphasized the government’s commitment to deploying resources to address Ogoni concerns and promote shared prosperity.
He also posthumously honored four Ogoniland members, Chief Edward Kobani, Chief Albert Bade, Chief Samuel Orage, and Chief Theophilus Orage, with the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) for their environmental protection efforts. Additionally, Ken Saro Wiwa and eight other Ogoni activists were previously honored in June for their sacrifices.
Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, noted improvements attributed to the President’s confidence-building measures, including progress on the East-West Road and the establishment of the Federal University of Environment and Technology. NSA Ribadu affirmed that the President’s endorsed steps fostered trust among stakeholders, leading to a collaborative report.
Ribadu highlighted the mediation of tensions and the spirit of dialogue that prevailed durin
g consultations, resulting in a readiness for responsible oil production resumption in Ogoniland. He emphasized the need for structured community participation through equity development funds and employment.
Professor Don Baridam, Chairman of the Committee, expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for his commitment to the Ogoni people’s well-being, highlighting the effective leadership of the NSA in building trust and restoring hope.
