Lagos: Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has affirmed that governance remains central to restoring confidence and unlocking long-term prosperity under the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda. The governor made this statement at the Chartered Institute of Directors (CIoD) Dinner and Awards Night themed ‘The Triumph of Leadership in Challenging Times’. He was represented by Secretary to the Lagos State Government, Mr. Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Sanwo-Olu emphasized the state’s willingness to collaborate with the institute to advance governance. He asserted that authority only holds value when guided by integrity, honor, and governance. The governor noted the complexity of the current environment for directors, with unpredictable markets, technological advancements, and newer stakeholders’ demands shaping business operations and sustainability drives. He urged directors to remain informed and accountable as margins for error have narrowed, stressing that strong institutions support economic development.
Dr. Michael Olawale-Cole, CEO of Colenson Brokers Nigeria Ltd., highlighted that triumphs in directorship are often seen as breakthroughs, innovations, crisis resolutions, and market expansion. However, he stated that leadership in challenging times demonstrates that triumph is not merely a destination but the journey itself. Olawale-Cole affirmed that true leadership triumphs by navigating adversity, ensuring teams emerge stronger and more resilient.
CIoD President, Mr. Adetunji Oyebanji, remarked that the event’s theme reflects the courage and discipline required of directors amidst economic strain, social pressure, and changing corporate realities. He acknowledged the directors who maintain sound judgment and clarity despite uncertainties impacting organizations. Oyebanji reiterated the institute’s commitment to enhancing directorship standards in Nigeria and fostering responsible board practices.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that BUA cement received the CIoD corporate governance award, while Dr. Shamsuddeen Usman, Chairman of the Ministry of Finance Incorporated, was recognized for good governance.
