Abuja: Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential candidate, Prince Adewole Adebayo, has announced that the party is committed to rescuing Nigeria from poverty and insecurity. He made this declaration during the party’s September National Convention, themed ‘Consolidating the blueprint for a new Nigeria to secure our homeland and defeat poverty’, held on Wednesday in Abuja.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Adebayo emphasized that Nigeria’s vast natural resources were divinely endowed to ensure the country’s prosperity. He highlighted the SDP’s core mission, distinguishing it from other political platforms by focusing on collective nation-building rather than personal gain. Drawing a historical parallel with the annulled 1993 presidential election, believed to have been won by the late Chief MKO Abiola, Adebayo lamented that the poverty the party aimed to defeat decades ago has only worsened, affecting the nation’s citizens deeply.
The presidential candidate addressed the current economic challenges, arg
uing that Nigeria’s underdevelopment is not due to a lack of natural resources but rather a failure in visionary governance. He claimed that Nigeria possesses enough oil, gas, and other mineral deposits to rival and even surpass major global economies. Adebayo articulated a grassroots strategy centered on door-to-door mobilization to engage everyday citizens, urging party members to reject politics driven by personal enrichment and instead focus on uniting the country ahead of the upcoming elections.
The party’s vice-presidential candidate, Prof. Usman Bugaje, supported this reformist stance by warning of potential threats if citizens continue to prioritize transactional politics over genuine structural change. Bugaje emphasized that the SDP’s framework calls for individuals committed to national transformation rather than financial gains or superficial party metrics. He urged party members to embrace integrity, sacrifice, and ideological clarity to guide the nation away from its current challenges.
