Freetown: Sierra Leone is set to welcome 1,280 tourists as part of the 2026 Budapest-Bamako rally, according to the Managing Director of the National Tourist Board, Fatmata Mida Carew, who spoke at a weekly press conference held at the Miatta Civic Center.
According to Sierra Leone News Agency, Madam Carew revealed that this significant influx of tourists will arrive in multiple batches over the next month, following the arrival of a large group that recently reached the country. She emphasized that Sierra Leone being chosen as the permanent end point for the rally showcases increasing international confidence in the nation as a tourist destination.
Madam Carew described the Budapest-Bamako rally as the largest amateur rally globally and noted that discussions regarding a ten-year agreement with the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs further demonstrate trust in Sierra Leone’s tourism potential. She highlighted that when tourists conclude their journey in the country, it benefits the local economy by
supporting various sectors including hotels, transport, food, arts and crafts, nightlife, and other local services.
Carew mentioned that many vehicles and motorbikes used in the rally are sold locally, creating additional economic value, while some visitors extend their stay for weeks or even months. She stressed that tourism promotion efforts are ongoing beyond hosting the rally, with the Ministry and the National Tourist Board continuing initiatives to keep Sierra Leone visible as a tourist destination.
She further explained that while the focus was on ecotourism last year, this year’s theme revolves around culture and creativity, supported by initiatives like the ‘Tourism for All’ campaign. Carew also discussed ongoing projects such as the Leicester Peak project with the World Bank, the Tacugama Innovation Center, the Bureh Surf Club, and the restoration of the old Fourah Bay College building. Events like the One Nation Reggae Festival are also aimed at attracting more visitors.

The National Tourist Board indicates that these efforts aim to strengthen tourism development and position Sierra Leone as a sustainable and welcoming destination.
