Abuja: President Bola Tinubu has accepted the resignation of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun and appointed Tunji Disu as Acting IGP with immediate effect. This transition marks a significant shift in the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the presidential spokesperson, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, issued a statement on Tuesday in Abuja, confirming the developments. Egbetokun tendered his resignation due to pressing family considerations. President Tinubu expressed his appreciation for Egbetokun’s decades of distinguished service to the Nigeria Police Force and the nation, acknowledging his dedication, professionalism, and commitment to strengthening internal security during his tenure.
Egbetokun was initially appointed in June 2023, with a four-year term set to conclude in June 2027 under the amended Police Act. However, due to prevailing security challenges, President Tinubu deemed it necessary to appoint Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Di
su, as the acting Inspector-General of Police. The appointment is effective immediately and aims to provide steady leadership for the force at a critical time.
In compliance with the Police Act 2020, President Tinubu will convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to consider Disu’s appointment as the substantive IGP. Following this, his name will be transmitted to the Senate for confirmation.
