Abuja: President Bola Tinubu on Monday urged Nigerians to embrace the discipline, integrity, and service ethos of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing them as pillars of enduring nation-building. Tinubu spoke at the launch of the book, ‘From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari,’ held at the State House, Abuja.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Tinubu emphasized that the true measure of a leader is not defined by the offices he held but by the lasting impact of his actions. He praised Buhari for his reputation of integrity, his spartan lifestyle, and his belief that public office is a trust rather than a windfall. Tinubu described Buhari as a leader characterized by quiet strength and personal discipline.
The President extended condolences to Buhari’s family, including his widow, Aisha Buhari, noting that the former leader’s name would continue to inspire future generations. He reflected on their shared political journey, highlighting the 2015 election as a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s political history, where their coalition succeeded in unseating an incumbent president.
Tinubu noted that the book offers an honest account of Buhari’s achievements and shortcomings, urging future leaders to derive lessons from his legacy. He identified humility, security, long-term vision, and social justice as core pillars of Buhari’s contributions to the nation.
He stressed that Buhari consistently demonstrated love for Nigeria and was widely respected for his honesty, even by those who disagreed with him. Tinubu called for cooperation across differences, emphasizing that it is a sign of wisdom, not weakness. He urged Nigerians to keep politics honorable and governance results-oriented.
Tinubu concluded by praying for Allah’s mercy for the late former president and comfort for his family. Dr. Charles Omole, the author of the book, described it as the most comprehensive account of Buhari’s life and legacy. He noted that the 600-page book addresses several complex questions regarding Buhari’s journey and leadership.
The event also saw tributes from former service chiefs and senior officials who served under Buhari. Hajia Hadiza Buhari, daughter of the former president, expressed gratitude on behalf of the family to Tinubu and Nigerians for their support and prayers. She acknowledged that while Buhari’s life was not perfect, his legacy should inspire future generations to build strong systems that translate good intentions into lasting outcomes.
