Post: Tinubu Inaugurates New Naval Assets to Strengthen Nigerian Maritime Security

Lagos: President Bola Tinubu has inaugurated three Nigerian Navy Ships (NNS) – NNS SHERE, NNS FARO, and NNS IKOGOSI – along with three AW109 Trekker helicopters: 501, 502, and 503 into the Nigerian Navy fleet. Speaking at the inauguration in Lagos, Tinubu emphasized the importance of these additions in enhancing the country’s maritime security.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the president, represented by the Minister of State for Defence, Mr Bello Matawalle, highlighted that the integration of the Fast Patrol Boats and maritime surveillance helicopters demonstrates Nigeria’s commitment to safeguarding its maritime domain. He noted that the sea is crucial to the nation’s economic prosperity, and for nearly seven decades, the Nigerian Navy has been pivotal in protecting these waters.

President Tinubu assured the navy of continued governmental support, underscoring that a strong navy is fundamental to maintaining a secure and thriving economy. He praised the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Adm. Emmanuel Ogalla, for his leadership and efforts in modernizing the naval fleet, which contributes to bridging capability gaps and restoring the navy’s pride.

The president also commended the National Assembly for its commitment to funding and oversight, which have been crucial in achieving the fleet expansion. He urged for sustained unity of purpose, emphasizing that maritime security transcends political boundaries and requires collective vigilance.

Tinubu extended his appreciation to international allies and technical partners for their collaboration, highlighting the shared responsibility in securing the Gulf of Guinea. He emphasized that maritime security is a global concern and not solely Nigeria’s responsibility.

Addressing the officers and ratings who will operate the new assets, Tinubu charged them to recognize the significance of their role in fulfilling Nigeria’s maritime aspirations. He envisioned a future where Nigerian waters are secure, enabling peaceful fishing activities and facilitating unhindered global trade through the country’s ports.

The president reiterated that the Nigerian Navy remains a key protector of the blue economy and encouraged them to perform their duties with courage, knowing that the nation supports their efforts.
