Abuja: Benue Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has attributed the strengthening of the state’s finances to President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms, which have bolstered investments in infrastructure, security, agriculture, healthcare, and workers’ welfare.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Alia made these remarks during the periodic ‘Meet the Press’ briefing at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. He highlighted how increased allocations from the Federation Account and improved Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) have fortified Benue’s fiscal position, accelerating various development projects throughout the state.
Governor Alia praised President Tinubu for his decisive action in implementing essential economic reforms to secure Nigeria’s long-term growth. He emphasized the Federal Government’s consistent engagement with states as essential partners in these initiatives. Alia noted that Benue has experienced a notable surge in federal allocations, which have revitalized the state’s economy and enabled it to meet critical obligations.
The governor elaborated on the impact of improved revenues on the state’s capacity to invest in crucial sectors such as infrastructure, education, healthcare, agriculture, and security. This financial boost has allowed for the revival of industries like the Food Basket Brewery and the Benue Juice and Concentrate Factory. Alia mentioned that efforts to resuscitate Taraku Mills are nearing completion after overcoming legal hurdles.
Improved fiscal conditions have also facilitated the clearance of salary arrears and a substantial reduction in outstanding pension liabilities that plagued workers and pensioners before his administration. Alia reiterated his commitment to prioritizing workers’ welfare to enhance productivity.
Significant advancements have been made in infrastructure, with over 550 kilometers of roads rehabilitated or constructed to improve connectivity across local government areas. More than 420 basic education facilities have also been reconstructed, while primary healthcare centers have been upgraded, turning Benue into a healthcare hub attracting patients from neighboring regions.
In the agricultural sector, the government has sustained the free distribution of essential farm inputs and provided tractors to encourage mechanized farming, resulting in increased food production. Security improvements have enabled many internally displaced persons to return to their communities and resume farming activities.
Governor Alia acknowledged that while initial reforms led to inflation and higher living costs, expanding agricultural production is gradually alleviating these pressures. He assured residents that public resources would be managed prudently and transparently, welcoming constructive criticism to enhance governance and public service delivery.
