Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his support for a new package of sanctions against Russia in response to its ongoing war in Ukraine, while expressing his hope that these measures will not have to be implemented.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Trump made these remarks during an interview with U.S. broadcaster Fox News. He emphasized that the United States has already imposed significant sanctions on Russia, asserting that the Russian economy is in a challenging position. Despite these sanctions, Trump acknowledged Russia’s larger size and influence compared to Ukraine.
In recent months, Trump has taken several actions aimed at weakening Russia’s economic position as the conflict in Ukraine progresses into its fourth year. These actions include imposing sanctions on Russia’s two largest oil companies and implementing tariffs on India due to its trade relations with Moscow.
Republican Senator Lindsey Graham mentioned that the proposed sanctions package could provide Trump with the opportunity to exert more pressure on nations such as China, India, and Brazil to cease their purchases of Russian oil.
