Abuja: Turkish Ambassador to Nigeria, Mehmet Poroy, has emphasized Trkiye’s special interest in Nigeria, citing shared challenges in combating terrorism as a key factor in the relationship. Poroy spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, highlighting the mutual benefits of collaboration in counterterrorism efforts.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Poroy noted that Trkiye’s extensive experience in fighting various terrorist organizations has equipped it with valuable insights and resources that it is eager to share with Nigeria. The ambassador stressed that Nigeria’s success in its battle against terrorism, particularly against groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP, is vital for the stability of the West African sub-region and the continent at large.
Poroy further explained that Trkiye has advanced its defense industry to address security threats, and this development could be beneficial to Nigeria through cooperative efforts in military and defense sectors. He mentioned ongoing collaborations with Nigerian counterparts to enhance military cooperation, including joint local production of defense equipment.
Highlighting Nigeria’s economic significance, Poroy remarked on the country’s status as West Africa’s biggest economy and Africa’s fourth largest, which positions it as a strategic partner for Trkiye. He pointed out the importance of Nigeria’s large population and economic potential in expanding economic ties between the two nations.
The ambassador also reflected on the historical ties between Trkiye and Nigeria, dating back to interactions between the Ottoman Empire and the Kanem-Bornu Empire in the 16th century. He underscored the establishment of the Turkish Embassy in Nigeria shortly after its independence as a testament to the longstanding importance of their bilateral relations.
